From penetration and detonation underground, to air-blast, to a nuclear attack against U.S. satellites in space, ARA scientists and engineers understand the range of complex physics associated with weapons development, testing, and effects. 

Our technical and operational expertise helps planners develop novel tactics, techniques, and procedures to hold emerging and hard-to-defeat enemy targets at risk. We apply our full spectrum of CBRNE (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosives) effects expertise in trade studies, Analysis of Alternatives, weapon system design, operational planning, targeting, design of protective structures, design of protective equipment, and training simulators. We provide direct support services as well as software products enabling others to perform these analyses.

ARA-developed models simulate the extreme environments created by conventional blasts and chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons. We model the physics of the weapon, the environments created by the weapon, and the effect of these environments on humans and man-made objects. Our deep understanding of physical laws is applied to developing high-fidelity, first-principles simulations of these abnormal environments. The resulting software is recognized as national standards for analysis and design of facilities and building components subjected to blast loads. ARA’s simulation-based design process is reducing risk, enabling enhanced capability, and shortening program timelines.

We design weapon systems with enhanced survivability, penetration depth, range, and explosive performance. We also develop advanced nonlethal and lethal concepts and designs that make weapon systems smarter and limit collateral damage. ARA’s long history in offensive Counter-WMD weapon system development and testing provides warfighter confidence in system capabilities.

ARA assists military contractors in ensuring that aircraft weaponry operates as designed by manufacturing munitions fuzing antennas that control the detonation of missiles, and our expertise in low observability and counter surveillance enables our military to protect its personnel and equipment from a variety of threats, including ground control intercept radars, surface-to-air missiles, anti-aircraft artillery, and airborne interceptors.

Electronic warfare, the development of technologies that use the electromagnetic spectrum for military applications, has become an important and growing area of expertise for the scientists and engineers at ARA, and our experts have electronic support, direction finding, electronic attack, and electronic protection capabilities for body-worn technologies, stationary bases, aircraft and ground vehicles.

ARA also has a current initiative to grow our Non-Kinetic Weapons (NKW) business area including Directed Energy Weapons (DEW) and Non-Lethal Weapons (NLW) by leveraging our broad experience base in conventional weapons and senior engineering staff with a long history supporting major government programs. DEW programs span nearly every major service. The Naval Surface Warfare Center’s Indian Head Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division in Maryland has recently awarded us one of four multiple-award, cost-plus-fixed-fee, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contracts for non-lethal weapons research and development under the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program (JNLWP). 

Our multi-disciplined staff integrates weapons and advanced robotic systems that can infiltrate denied sites and maximize the reach of our war fighters. We develop and analyze weapons and effects for electromagnetic pulse, directed energy, and electronic warfare. These, along with cyber, kinetic-lite, and functional defeat options, are providing new ways to defeat enemy targets.
