ARA a leader in security engineering and protective design, is proud to announce its role in the development of a newly released American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-approved school security standard, published by ASIS International.
This landmark standard is the first comprehensive framework of its kind, providing K-12 schools with a clear, evidence-based approach to enhancing security and resilience. It offers practical guidance for developing, implementing, maintaining, and improving security measures across K-12 education institutions, regardless of size or location.
Kenneth Herrle, an ARA senior engineer and security expert, volunteered on the Technical Committee that developed the new standard. With over three decades of security experience, Herrle has been instrumental in providing protective design solutions for critical facilities domestically and abroad. He is a recognized contributor to multiple national-level structural and physical security standards for government agencies and professional organizations.
“This standard is the result of close collaboration across multiple disciplines, and it sets a new benchmark for school security. ARA is honored to contribute our expertise to an initiative that will help schools across the country and across the globe identify risks and implement smarter, more effective security strategies.”
Kenneth Herrle, ARA Senior Engineer
The standard was developed through a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together school administrators, security professionals, architects, mental health practitioners, behavioral threat assessment experts, emergency managers, law enforcement, crisis communication specialists, and business continuity planners. Their combined knowledge has resulted in a robust, adaptable framework schools can rely on for comprehensive threat mitigation and response planning.
Contributions like this reflect ARA’s ongoing commitment to developing solutions to critical human problems that will make our world safer, make us more secure, and make a difference in our daily lives.
Published by ASIS International, a global community of security practitioners, the new ANSI-approved school security standard is now available in both eBook and print formats. The newly released standard can be found as an eBook here, or in print here.
