BP2: A Better Approach to Burn Care Training

Treating burn wounds effectively presents many challenges spanning wound healing, infection control, systemic complications, pain management, and long-term outcomes, and many healthcare professionals lack formal, comprehensive burn care training. To address this gap, Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is partnering with the Burn Center at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine to develop a new virtual training program for treating complex burn injuries.

Custom Content Creation

The Burns for Providers Program (BP2) features a mobile learning app and content creation tools that allow subject matter experts (SMEs) and instructors to independently create novel training scenarios.

“BP2’s user-friendly scenario building tools can be adapted for a wide range of decision‑making training needs related to burn care,” said Marcia Clover, an ARA senior producer leading the technical effort. “SMEs can easily customize our content creation tools to support different types of scenarios tailored to their training needs.”

Its intuitive drag‑and‑drop interface includes visual tools for creating 3D virtual patients with thermal or electrical burns, bandages, and bruising. Users can also adjust patient attributes such as age, gender, and skin tone. BP2’s flexible, cloud‑based architecture supports seamless integration and distribution of training content.

Built for Better Learning

The Burns for Providers Program (BP2) also strengthens critical burn care training through an adaptive, individualized mobile learning app. Designed for both civilian and military medical providers, BP2 prepares users to treat burn casualties in advanced trauma care settings and forward-deployed environments.

The app delivers immersive, virtual reality simulations and interactive role‑play scenarios that support training for burn casualty monitoring, principles of wound care, and best practices for pain and infection management, as well as patient decontamination, debridement, and wound dressing.

With a proven track record of delivering mission‑focused training solutions, ARA is advancing next‑generation capabilities that strengthen critical medical readiness.

“ARA has extensive experience designing and delivering immersive training. With BP2, the goal is to ultimately support better burn care training through asynchronous simulation-based learning for a better patient outcome.” – Marcia Clover, ARA Senior Producer
