Cyber Operations Lethality and Effectiveness

Providing Critical Cyberspace Intelligence to Decision Makers

ARA’s Cyber Operations Lethality and Effectiveness (COLE) is an innovative mission planning tool that provides critical information to decision makers to reliably estimate cyberspace operations effects for targeting, weaponeering, and planning.

COLE enables mission planners to model cyber networks, characterize network properties and associated uncertainties, and model the effects of capabilities against those networks. Mission planners use COLE to assess various attack paths that consider the dynamic state of the target – including stealth, access, and risk – when calculating the probability of effect.

COLE at a Glance

Offensive and Defensive Cyber Network Modeling

Only Accredited Cyber Effect Planning Tool

Provides Insights Into Tangible Mission Impacts

Data Standards

COLE’s high data standards help transform data (intelligence, capabilities, target) coming in and out of the software suite.

Capability Management

COLE catalogs performance, provenance, and effectiveness of cyber effects and enabling capabilities against characterized targets.

Performance Analysis

Enables access to standardized offensive cyber capability performance data; ability to simulate individual and chained attacks.

Mission Planning

Scheme of maneuver simulation capabilities enables COLE to calculate the probability of an effect for a sequence of attacks based on target properties and selection of available weapons. These simulation capabilities require knowledge of weapon characteristics and vulnerabilities of the target.

Uncertainty and Confidence is Characterized on all Targetable Properties

Dynamic State Modeling Highlights Progression of System Accessibility

The first step COLE takes to successfully assess cyberspace operations effects is network characterization.

COLE’s network characterization enables the development and data-enriched modeling of cyber terrain; components (nodes), configuration and properties (e.g., hardware, software, network addressing, ports, services, etc.) of an operational environment model (OEM).

Automated Early System Vulnerability Discovery

Ranked Vulnerability Heatmap

Included with COLE are a suite of accredited analysis tools to evaluate network and component cyber vulnerabilities.

COLE provides the user the ability to examine which nodes are accessible and vulnerable from the current node. A vulnerability heatmap tool then ranks vulnerabilities based on various metrics. Also included COLE’s capabilities are nightly updates from the National Vulnerability Database that enable automated, early discovery of system vulnerabilities.

Attack Sequence Modeling

Effects-Based Modeling

COLE’s mission planning capabilities includes tools to optimize cyber network attacks and infer the aggregate effect or probability of success.

Functional based analysis provides insight into tangible mission impacts with the ability to simulate both individual and chained attacks.
