Contactless Energy-Based Tire-Pavement Traction Models
Tire-Pavement traction is a complex phenomenon affected by multiple factors including pavement surface texture, tire geometry and material characteristics, slip ratio, and skew angle. This complexity leads to challenge in assessing tire-pavement traction and skid resistance and discrepancies between different measurement devices and technologies. This presentation discusses the recent developments and findings for using energy-based friction models (EBFM) to predict skid numbers (SN) and coefficient of friction (COF) on a wide range of pavement surfaces. The audience will learn about:
- Advancements in empirical and mechanistic traction-texture models
- The differences between different pavement friction and skid resistance devices
- The impact of pavement surface texture on tire-pavement traction
- The future of contactless tire-pavement traction measurements
- The role of friction and skid measurements in pavement friction management
