U.S. Air Force Utilities GIS—Linear Segmentation
The U.S. Department of Defense is on the road to a “real property accountability and business process…to manage assets throughout their lifecycle.” With ARA’s support in providing linear segmentation policy recommendations, the U.S. Air Force began enterprise asset management for it major pavement system portfolio. Using ARA recommendations, the Air Force for the past 5 years has implemented segmentation principles and policies, along with recommendations from condition assessments that ARA has helped perform for the past 20 years. Last year, the Air Force expanded their asset management focus to address utilities information needed for lifecycle enterprise asset management.
As the lead member of the contractor team supporting the Air Force’s linear segmentation efforts, ARA’s responsibilities involve:
- Updating all Air Force bases’ geographic information system (GIS) utilities linear segmentation data to Spatial Data Standards for Facilities, Infrastructure, and Environment (SDSFIE) 3.1.
- Data analysis, collection, and completion of missing utilities GIS data to SDSFIE 3.1 standards from all available sources (e.g., existing utility maps, assessment reports, knowledgeable system technicians).
- Going to each Air Force base, worldwide Active and Reserve (114 total), to gather data.
Through our support, the U.S. Air Force will attain compliance with the mandate for linear segmentation of utilities infrastructure. The resulting data will provide increased asset visibility, better operations and maintenance planning, and environmental impact assessments.
