Challenge

ERDC needed ARA to evaluate detailed normal stress patterns acting on projectile noses during penetration/punching of thin slabs, with nose footprint contours cast in mathematical form (referred to as forcing function).

Solution

ARA performed testing and evaluation on:

  • model projectile/thin-slab interactions
  • analyze contacting detonation and breach
  • partitioning of embedded detonation and energy

Impact

ARA conducted testing and evaluation on ERDC engines. The forcing function was implemented into PENCRV3D (a rigid body penetration code) and benchmarked against available penetration test results.
