Tyndall Air Force Base Directory App
Tyndall Air Force base had a comprehensive phone directory, but it was not in a web-based version that was easy to navigate and use. Our challenge was to build a phone app that captured all those numbers, make them universally searchable, as well as include links to housing and school information, and local things to do. The base also wanted the ability for Airmen to opt in to push notifications to get real-time information about gate closures and other announcements when they were away from their desktop computers.
We followed a three-step approach:
- Our first step was to identify the target audience for the app. We met with Tyndall officials and identified Airmen 18-25 as the core audience for the app. These are the newest Airmen and are less likely to be familiar with the general layout and phone system of most bases. Spouses were a secondary audience.
- We then gathered a focus group of young Airmen to talk over design items and which features would be most useful to them.
- After we completed our research, our team created the design and infrastructure to handle the directory database and make it smooth and easy to navigate.
Tyndall now has a modern, intuitive directory app that is accessible to Airmen worldwide. Those coming to Tyndall can get familiar with the base well in advance through the app, and make the transition with more confidence.
The app is available for all Android and Apple devices:
