Improving TSA Screening Performance via Cognitive Systems Engineering

TSA Passenger Checkpoint

ARA improved Transportation Security Administration screening officer performance through attention to human performance issues that included selection and workload, training, and human-machine interface.

ARA's Cognitive Solutions Group identified human performance requirements and capabilities in passenger screening, identified variables involved in screening, determined the state of knowledge regarding human screener capabilities (and gaps in this knowledge base), assessed risks associated with these gaps, developed hypotheses concerning human-machine enhancements, and developed a research roadmap that address each gap.

A prioritized 5-year research plan guided TSA research to improve airport checkpoint security screening.
