ARA Names Three New Vice Presidents March 28, 2007


ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. March 28, 2007 — ARA’s Board of Directors has appointed Bob Couch, John Haas and Dave Hein to Vice President. All three currently serve as ARA Division Managers.

Bob Couch

Bob is Manager of ARA’s Shock Physics Division in Albuquerque, NM. Prior to joining ARA in 2004, Bob worked for Tetra Tech EM, Inc. conducting environmental investigations and restoring military test sites and Department of Energy facilities. His responsibilities included cleanup of the Inhalation Toxicology Research Institute on Kirtland Air Force Base and the restoration work at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. He has also been active in many Homeland Defense Initiatives and vulnerability studies and in aftermath and cleanup exercises involving terrorist radiological devices. Bob also served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1990 as Nuclear Branch Chief in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force (Acquisition). His military career focused on many diverse geotechnical and weapons projects worldwide.

A Registered Professional Geologist in Texas, Bob’s education includes a bachelor’s degree in Geology from Capital University in Columbus, OH, and a master’s degree in Geology from Ohio State University through the Air Force Institute of Technology.

John Haas

John is ARA’s New England Division Manager in South Royalton, VT, where he is active in the development of sensors and analytical methodologies for process, environmental, biotechnical, and geotechnical monitoring applications, including planetary exploration. John received his doctorate in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts and has been principal investigator on research programs in field analytical chemistry instrumentation, detection of chemicals of concern to human health, sensor development, geochemistry/geophysics, in situ sampling and measurement techniques, remote fiber-optic sensing, laser spectroscopy and miniature devices.

Among his many achievements are the invention of various fiber-optic probes, a miniature fluorescence sensor, and a unique Raman spectrograph. He also developed an array of small chemical, radiation, and geophysical sensors and samplers for cone penetrometer use. John joined ARA in 1998 after working as a senior scientist at EIC Laboratories, Inc. in Norwood, MA, and at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Dave Hein

Dave is Manager of the ARA Transportation Sector’s Infrastructure Management Division. With more than 20 years of experience in the industry, he has designed and implemented major pavement and maintenance management systems for government and private sector clients worldwide. Dave is the author of more than 25 technical publications and has taught more than 50 training courses in pavement design, evaluation, and management throughout Canada and overseas.

Prior to joining the former ERES Consultants Division of ARA in March 2000, Dave worked as a principal pavements engineer for John Emery Geotechnical Engineering, Ltd., where he performed pavement management, pavement evaluation, and design. He is a graduate of Ontario’s University of Waterloo with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, and he is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick.
