Biodegradation of PerchlorateARA has pioneered biodegradation processes for perchlorate treatment. Between 1992 and 1997, ARA and the U.S. Air Force developed a patented Perchlorate Biodegradation Process. In 1997, ARA developed the first commercial perchlorate biodegradation system for industrial wastewater at ATK Launch Systems. ARA's biodegradation process is low-cost, robust, and simple to operate. A second generation biodegradation system was constructed for industrial wastewater treatment at Hodgdon Powder Company, Pyrodex Plant in 2004.
