Smart Glass

Problem Statement and Objectives

A clear indication of a sniper targeting a VIP vehicle could prevent a shot being fired, or at least, permit vehicle maneuvering to prevent an effective shot. Aiming lasers, such as a targeting laser, enhance range and accuracy. Technical Support Working Group (TSWG) needed a transparent detection layer to be placed on the inside of windows capable of detecting the presence of a laser beam.

Results and Benefits

The ARA team developed Smart Glass, a thin, transparent, optically active material to be mounted on windows. This material is made from a polymeric film or semi-rigid plastic sheet treated with a dopant. The glass is capable of issuing a threat alarm; therefore, diminishing the ability of snipers to target VIPs through glass windows.
