Simulation-based Design Expanded Capabilities

Problem Statement and Objectives

Military vehicles were in need of a new method that could simulate the effects of buried mines on military service cars. A Simulation-Based Design (SBD) system was demonstrated and tested successfully. Applied Research Associates (ARA) was hired to help support the development of the project’s objectives.

  • determine interaction of a shallow buried explosive with the ground and the effects of soil properties on the vehicle loading

  • portray the threat of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to military ground vehicles

  • represent vehicle occupant kinematics and injuries which might be sustained

Results and Benefits

By enabling rapid simulations of many threat scenarios, the SBD system expedited the design of new vehicles, improved the protection capability of existing vehicles at a reduced design cost, and expanded current SBD system capabilities with the
development of new modules for the system.
