Kewaunee Plant Tornado Missiles

Problem Statement and Objectives

The Kewaunee Nuclear Power Plant in Wisconsin needed to perform a tornado missile risk analysis. The critical targets included diesel generator exhausts stacks and other vents vulnerable to debris impacts during a tornado.
  •  Accurate prediction
  •  Clear understanding of risk

Results and Benefits

Applied Research Associates, Inc (ARA) took a model of the tornado climatology and estimated the damage mechanisms to the vents. We also estimated the probability per year of damage to each vulnerable component. The plant has used this information to determine if protection of these components is warranted based on the risk of damage.
