Composite Aeroshell Technology Program

Problem Statement and Objectives

NASA was in need of new, high-temperature composite aeroshells for future deep-space missions. ARA supported ATK-Space Systems in developing advanced structural composite systems for NASA/LaRC.

  • Provide ablator materials for COI's adhesive bonding process development and testing.

  • Provide coupons of silica-phenolic honeycomb as well as ablator coupons consisting of representative formulations of phenolic and silicone ablators.

Results and Benefits

In a production setting at the Ablatives Laboratory, ARA and ATK-Space Systems evaluated and reported on the bonding processes developed at COI by performing their own in-house ablator bonding to composite substrates supplied by COI.
