Science Foundations for Bomb Squad Training

Problem Statement and Objectives

A new training method was needed to focus on the basic science behind the operation of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), focusing on the physics, chemistry and electronics of these devices.

ARA conducted a cognitive task analysis (CTA) that captured characteristics significant to IEDs and combined them with basic science facts to create content targeted for end-user requirements.

Objectives

  • create a technical training project for use by bomb squad technicians

  • develop modules for physics, explosive chemistry, and electronics

  • provide supplemental hand-on kits

  • evaluate best-in-value delivery

Results and Benefits

A Systems Approach to Training was applied to develop compliant modules on basic science for IEDs, contextualized to the cognitive cues on-scene to correctly identify IEDs. Multi-sensory media, demonstrations, and exercises were created for improved retention, synthesis and reapplication.
