Georgia Statewide Repair, Upgrade & Maintenance of Automated Traffic Recording (ATR) Sites

Problem Statement and Objectives

Beginning in 2001, ARA began the process of upgrading the traffic data collection capabilities of the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) through a contract to install, repair, and perform maintenance on new and existing automatic traffic data collection sites throughout the state.

Under this contract, ARA has designed, constructed, and installed over 350 permanent automatic vehicle classification (AVC) and weigh-in-motion (WIM) data collection sites at locations determined by GDOT. In addition, ARA has designed, constructed, and installed more than 30 vehicle volume data collection sites using non-intrusive microwave detectors in and around the metro Atlanta area. These detectors are used in conjunction with GDOT’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS).

In addition to our turn-key site installations, ARA performed preventive and corrective maintenance on all of the sites and performed special vehicle data collection counts to aid in the quality control of the collected data. Preventive maintenance activities consist of quarterly inspection visits to each site to check for damage to equipment and/or significant changes to the pavement condition in the area of the traffic sensors. Corrective maintenance activities are performed when polling reports supplied by GDOT indicate a significant change in traffic levels, vehicle type distribution, or other significant deviation from previously collected data.

Results and Benefits

ARA's performance on this contract allowed GDOT to greatly expand the amount and quality of the traffic data available for managing their highway network, which is the eleventh largest in the United States (nearly 18,000 miles of state highways).
