Our approach is to identify skilled performance by extracting
knowledge from experts. Once we understand the nature and aspects of
expertise in an area, by "getting inside the heads" of the experts, we
are able to develop programs to transfer that expertise to others.
We have created a program of Decision Skills Training based on
years of research as to how expertise actually develops. The program
focuses on building two important skills: making decisions in complex
situations, and coaching others to make better decisions. It uses
scenarios called Decision Making Games as a context for the
training. Instructor training via workshops or multimedia is
offered to teach the facilitation of Decision Skills Training. Our
techniques for eliciting expertise from highly experienced individuals
can also be applied to knowledge management initiatives.
Our studies often have implications for the ways organizations are
structured. Through the application of the Advanced Team Decision
Making Model, we help the organization understand the context in
which it makes (or doesn't make) decisions, including how it obtains
information, builds situation awareness, identifies problems, and
develops plans. The results of understanding decisions in context and
diagnosing performance barriers to effective decision making
can be changes in job roles and functions, processes, use of
communication
