Although it is useful to focus on the individual decision maker, there
is a larger picture to consider. The cognitive challenges that
individuals face occur in the context of the people, the tools, the
technology, the work processes and the task environment that surround
the individual performer. In the Collaborative Work group, we focus on
the larger picture. We provide a cognitive perspective, conduct
research, and develop applications to support and improve the
performance of workgroups, teams, and organizations.
We help teams and organizations understand how they make decisions,
identify and resolve problems, develop plans, communicate critical
information, and establish common ground. Our expertise in team and
organizational decision making provides critical insights to issues of
uncertainty, conflict, leadership, and cultural difference. These
insights allow teams and organizations to work smarter, faster, safer,
and more effectively.
Our perspectives and methods have been particularly relevant for
health care, where patient safety, quality of care issues and
economic outcomes are intimately linked to the work processes and
communication patterns of health care teams. Our findings and insights
are applicable to health care solutions such as training tools,
technology design and evaluation, workspace design, decision support
systems, and organizational programs.
Our studies often have implications for the ways organizations are
structured. Through the application of the Advanced Team Decision
Making Model, we help the organization understand the context in
which it makes (or doesn't make) decisions, including how it obtains
information, builds situation awareness, identifies problems, and
develops plans. The results of understanding decisions in context and
diagnosing performance barriers to effective decision making
can be changes in job roles and functions, processes, use of
communication and information tools, and the physical environment.
An illustration of our approach is our work with
Intensive Care Units. If you would like more information about how
we can help you understand your organization's decisions, barriers,
and information tools in an effort to create more effective work
teams, contact
