Blast & Security Consulting for Airports and Port Authorities

ARA performed the complete blast analysis/design and threat assessment for a major expansion of the facilities at San Francisco International Airport (SFIA). This included the new International Terminal, BART and light rail interface with the airport, two new parking garages and roadways, and an analysis of the existing central parking structure and existing terminals. The entire facade of the new international terminal is glass. Mitigation techniques were used to minimize the hazards posed to the occupants.

ARA performed post-event analyses of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. We also performed a threat assessment and concept development study for a blast resistant Police Command Center for the World Trade Center Complex. This was part of the Port Authority's response to the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993 (NY/NJ Port Authority). Additionally, ARA was retained to develop high-resolution models to analyze the collapse of the World Trade Center that occurred after terrorist attacks on 9/11.

ARA has performed blast assessment services for major airports since 1995. This work includes evaluating the capacity of existing facilities to withstand blast, as well as developing potential renovation options and operational security improvements to enhance the level of protection. Glazing hazards are a major feature that is addressed at all of these facilities.
