Profiler Testing and Support for the Florida Department of Transportation, State Materials Office

Problem Statement and Objectives

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) contracted with ARA to collect statewide pavement surface profile data using a high-speed laser profiler. ARA provided:

  • Top-of-the-line equipment
  • Roadway system specialists
  • Accurate and timely results

The profile data are collected on new and rehabilitated hot mix asphalt pavement surfaces and are used to evaluate the ride quality (smoothness) of the pavement surface and determine pay factors for FDOT's paving contracts.

Results and Benefits
The Ride Number (RN) calculated from the profile data is compared against specified values to accept the roadway and to determine pay factors based upon pavement smoothness.

Profiler employs three 32 kHz lasers with accelerometers and data acquisition system to measure longitudinal and transverse roadway profiles at highway speeds.
