National Gallery of Art Disaster Management Plan
Problem Statement and Objectives
The National Gallery of Art (NGA) and its Sculpture Garden are located on the National Mall in Washington, DC. NGA consists of the East and West Buildings connected by an underground concourse and contains four public entrances. Due to its strategic location (i.e., close to the U.S. Capitol on the National Mall), the public nature of the facilities, and the importance of the irreplaceable art, the National Gallery is a potential target of terrorist attack or may be subject to collateral damage from an attack on nearby historical landmarks or centers of government. To better protect the employees, visitors, and exhibits, the National Gallery of Art requested that ARA:
- Review the existing NGA disaster management plan for comprehensiveness
- Meet with NGA staff to discuss their organization, collections, critical assets and current emergency procedures
- Develop a revised draft disaster management plan to include preparation, response, and recovery phases
- Incorporate comments from the National Gallery of Art and provide an overview briefing of the plan.
