Metrolink, experiencing significant collisions between their rail cars in recent years, approached ARA through Ernster Law Offices, asking for assistance in analyzing the safety of Metrolink's operational procedures.

• investigate collision between a Metrolink train and Ford truck, January 6, 2003
  
• calculate collision loads with LS-DYNA and investigate possible derailment conditions
  
• determining effects of push vs. pull operation for trains

Results and Benefits

Determined effects of train operation in push mode led by cab rather than pull mode led by the locomotive.
