Heat Shield Ablator Material Screening and Development
Problem Statement and Objectives
NASA needed samples of arc-jets supplied to them for ablator tests and mechanical (flexure) test evaluations. ARA put together multiple samples of phenolic materials defined and specified by NASA.
- Support NASA screening tests of ablator materials
- Perform pretest analysis to support sample design
- Fabricate arc-jet test samples of different sizes
- Fabricate mechanical flexural test samples
- Conduct analytical heat-shield production studies
Results and Benefits
Delivered a total of 72 ablator test samples to NASA Ames for arc-jet and mechanical (flexure) test evaluation.
