Explosive Breaching Handbook

Problem Statement and Objectives

A variety of novel and unique configurations of explosive breaching devices, fabricated with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware, needed to be characterized in terms of performance and safety, and a comprehensive reference document was needed to summarize and characterize both commercial and novel COTS-type explosive breaching materials, methods and performance. ARA was asked to support and participate in characterization and development of documents.

  • characterize existing breaching methods and devices
  • develop a "Breaching Handbook" suitable for field use
  • develop a "Dynamic Breaching Characterization Report" (DBCR)

Results and Benefits

A Systems Approach to Training was applied to develop compliant modules on basic science for IEDs, conceptualized to the cognitive cues on-scene to correctly identify IEDs. Multi-sensory media, demonstrations, and exercises were created for improved retention, synthesis and reapplication compiled into the Dynamic Breaching Characterization Report (DBCR) and distilled into the Breaching Handbook. Breaching Handbook ruggedized for field use and developed so as to provide ready access to critical information. DBCR serves as ready reference for law enforcement agencies of all sizes and types.
