DD(X) Detail Design and Integration
Problem Statement and Objectives
Developed under the DD(X) destroyer program, DDG 1000 Zumwalt is the lead ship of a class of next-generation multi-mission destroyers tailored for land attack and littoral dominance. DDG 1000 will provide forward presence and deterrence, and operate as an integral part of joint and combined expeditionary forces.
ARA was called upon to support the Human-System Integration (HSI)
Cross-Product Team of the DDG 1000 Detail Design program, led by Bath Iron Works.
We achieved success in this program by understanding the sailors cognitive challenges and information requirements.

Results and Benefits
ARA's analysis enabled designers and engineers to fully understand the impacts of their design decisions, to improve or diminish, the Sailor's performance. By fully recognizing how critical cognitive requirements impact Human-Computer Interface (HCI) design, task modelers, training designers, and system engineers were able to develop far more effective displays and interfaces to improve Sailor performance on the USS ZUMWALT-class ships. These data analysis techniques can also be applied to other complex systems that require multiple individuals to process and communicate information quickly and effectively.
