Showcase Project | Urban Underground Model Generator (U2MG)
Realistic environments are critical for effective training. Realistic building representations are important for determining appropriate weapons effects on structures and for providing a fully immersive environment for first-person walk-throughs. Current methods of creating realistic buildings are time intensive and are often lacking sufficient detail for realism. Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA), along with the U.S. Army Research Development and Engineering Command Simulation and Training Technology Center (RDECOM/STTC), was asked to provide a solution to this problem, by providing a straightforward tool that allows the creation of detailed, realistic structures for simulations.
The ARA team developed the Urban and Underground Model Generator (U2MG). The U2MG has been used to create virtual and constructive simulations for U.S. Army training. For example, it has been used to generate exercise databases at the Unit of Action Maneuver Battle Lab (UAMBL) and the Topographic Engineering Center (TEC) for the One SAF Test Bed and the One SAF Objective System.
The U2MG tool uses a few basic inputs such as regional information, a basic building footprint, construction material, and building type to create an appropriate furnished interior along with a reasonably accurate structural design. U2MG databases are detailed in both form and function -- interior layouts are detailed enough for game-like first person walk-throughs and the structural representation is sufficient to allow detailed weapons effects calculations. The finished database can be exported to a variety of simulation file formats for both constructive and virtual training applications.
U2MG is available as a stand-alone tool, a plug-in for TERREX Terra Vista, and as a separate development API. These various implementations of the underlying logic enable current and future systems to integrate with U2MG and allow the tool itself to adapt to changing needs and modified database formats.
