| Exposure to mechanical shear stress can lead to blood damage (hemolysis). The level of hemolysis depends on many factors including shear stress, load history, current level of hemolysis, duration of exposure and temperature. This figure shows a comparison of the blood damage model with measurements for the threshold levels of shear stress and time of exposure that cause hemolysis in red blood cells. As the exposure time is increased, the level of stress required to cause hemolysis decreases. The power law blood damage model gives excellent agreement with the data. |

The above is an example of a graphical user interface (GUI) that can be used to optimize the design of an axial blood pump. The GUI allows the user to easily manipulate the pump design and perform analyses to optimize the pump for desired performance with a minimum of blood damage.
