"Astounding" and "very inspirational." Those are just two of the compliments received by ARA’s Joint Training and Experimentation Center Group (JTEC) in Guernsey, Wyo., after presentations on ground robotics and UAVs (Unmanned Air Vehicles) to area students this summer.

In July and August, JTEC hosted groups from the Laramie County, Wyo. 4-H, Guernsey Head Start program, and also Civil Air Patrol cadets from Wyoming, Colorado and Montana. JTEC staff demonstrated UAV operations to the students, showed how the ground-station software works and discussed robotic development and prototyping. The youths also saw videos of flights, as well as how autonomous operations work.

"While we explained the technological aspects, we emphasized opportunities about current and future careers in robotics," says John Offe, JTEC Operations Manager. "We were able to present the students with technologies and careers they previously might not have known about in this wide-open field of endeavor."

Since 2007, JTEC has actively participating in STEM. In May, JTEC partnered with two more student groups: the Laramie County 4-H Robotics group, and the Wyoming STARBASE Academy, a DoD youth program offered in partnership with the Wyoming National Guard and Wyoming Military Department. It provides youths with STEM (science/technology/engineering/math) activities that expose the students to career possibilities and also helps them connect to the "real world." At these sessions, JTEC employees explained robotics development and demonstrated their ground and aerial robots.

These outreach programs are the latest in JTEC's ongoing efforts to host events for youths in southeast Wyoming that encourage them to consider STEM careers. JTEC in Guernsey is the private-sector arm of a partnership between the DoD, the University of Wyoming and other agencies. ARA is supporting JTEC with technical staff who integrate new technology applications with state-of-the-art training facilities at Camp Guernsey, which prepares troops for live combat zones.
