JTEC Reaches Out to Southeast Wyoming StudentsAugust 2013
In July and August, JTEC hosted groups from the Laramie County, Wyo. 4-H, Guernsey Head Start program, and also Civil Air Patrol cadets from Wyoming, Colorado and Montana. JTEC staff demonstrated UAV operations to the students, showed how the ground-station software works and discussed robotic development and prototyping. The youths also saw videos of flights, as well as how autonomous operations work.
"While we explained the technological aspects, we emphasized opportunities about current and future careers in robotics," says John Offe, JTEC Operations Manager. "We were able to present the students with technologies and careers they previously might not have known about in this wide-open field of endeavor."
These outreach programs are the latest in JTEC's ongoing efforts to host events for youths in southeast Wyoming that encourage them to consider STEM careers. JTEC in Guernsey is the private-sector arm of a partnership between the DoD, the University of Wyoming and other agencies. ARA is supporting JTEC with technical staff who integrate new technology applications with state-of-the-art training facilities at Camp Guernsey, which prepares troops for live combat zones.
